NEWS

Kellogg Construction to Return

For the first time in 31 years, there is no construction on Kellogg. Well, that will change at some point in the near, undetermined future.

Governor Kelly announced a $750 million highway improvement plan for Kansas, more than 20% going to improvements on Kellogg in east Wichita.

So, what will $166 million be used on for Kellogg improvements?

  • reconstruct K-96 interchange
  • expand Kellogg to a six-lane freeway to just east of 159th St

This is part of the 10-year Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program.

BUSINESS

Closing

  • Wendy's - 160 S Rock Road - This location was demolished, but a new and improved Wendy's will be built in the same spot.

“Tremendous Step Forward”

When Riverfront Stadium was just a twinkle in the eye of Wichita, there was talk about development all along the west side of the river.

People were up in arms about the four acres along the river near the ballpark that the city sold to the team for just $1 per acre.

Now, there is a $65 million project including an 8-story hotel, 6-story office building, with parking and riverfront improvements on it’s way.

Centralized Medical Educational Center

In the best team up since the Avengers in 2012, WSU, WSU Tech, and KU schools of Medicine and Pharmacy are in talks to build a shared campus.

The campus will be called WSU/KU Healthcare Sciences Educational Center (HSEC) and will bring together each of the programs.

The location has not been announced, but WSU President Muma has stated it could be in downtown Wichita.

CIVIL

Chief Ramsey Leaving

It was announced Friday that Chief Gordon Ramsay will resign in March of 2022.

Among others, city council member Brandon Johnson will help find and choose his replacement.

Homeless Shelters

As the cold sets in, the homeless shelters are seeing an uptick in the number of people asking for help.

Where did the bus stops go?

If you use the public transit system in Wichita, you may have noticed that Wichita has dropped 189 bus stops in 2021 alone.

As reported in the Wichita Beacon, “Officials with Wichita Transit said the move is a step to streamline its bus system and move back toward a flag stop system — where users can wave the bus down in certain areas.”

LOCAL

Osteopathic Medicine

Next fall, the Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine will open downtown.

It will be the first osteopathic med school in Kansas with “an anticipated inaugural enrollment of 85 students, rising to 170 in yearly classes when fully operational. KHSC said an estimated 99 employees, full- and part-time, will be on staff at opening.”
